The best cafés in Shanghai

Our Shanghai list ranks 29 cafés, each named by between two and six independent published guides and ordered here by Google rating weighted for review volume. 星巴克臻选烘焙工坊 Starbucks Reserve Roastery leads them at 4.5 from 800 Google reviews, in 静安·南京西路 — #24 of 101 in Shanghai. The commonest style descriptors we hold on them are 国际精品连锁, 1934年老字号复兴, 书店庭院咖啡, among others.

29 ranked named by 2–6 guides each ordered by rating × review volume checked 12 October 2026 How this is built

Read this ranking as a visitor's shortlist. Google is blocked in mainland China, so the review counts below come almost entirely from foreign visitors and are very small. The guides that qualified these restaurants are Chinese and reliable; the numbers that order them are not a verdict from Shanghai's own diners. Why we still publish it.

Shanghai qualifies on two guides, not three. Its ranking platforms resist automated reading, so agreement between three guides we can actually read is structurally rarer here. Everything after that step — the formula, the weighting, the check date — is identical to every other city. The full reasoning.
